MORTIMER…
Mortimer has steadily emerged as an inimitable voice in contemporary reggae. A singer with an enthralling voice, who is equally comfortable creating traditional roots reggae as well as contemporary Jamaican music, and who dances between the two to reveal a sound thatblends his old-soul sensibilities with modern youthfulness.
Mortimer’s voice effortlessly glides between a raspy, smoky alto and a silky falsetto, with an unhurried delivery that has become signature of his sound.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, as a youth, Mortimer had dreams of becoming a soldier or an auto engineer, but these ambitions soon gave way to music.
In 2014, he released his first project, Message Music, a four-song effort produced by Jay Crazie Records. The project earned favourable reviews and solidified his commitment to a musical career.
An introduction to Jamaican recording artist Protoje, a forefront figurehead in the “Reggae Revival” movement, led to their collaboration “Protection”, the opening track on Protoje’s critically acclaimed third album Ancient Future, produced by Winta James.
Mortimer continued working with Winta James, featuring on the Mile High Riddim with the track “Nice Up Di Scene,” as well as reuniting with Protoje on “Truths & Rights,” included on Protoje’s GRAMMY®-nominated album A Matter of Time.
In October 2018, they released “Careful” via Overstand Entertainment/Easy Star Records. The track was championed by BBC Radio’s David Rodigan as a “big, heavy tune” and selected by Apple Music editors as one of only two Jamaican records featured on their “Best of 2018” editorial playlist.
This was followed by “Lightning” in July 2019—a down-tempo reggae love song with a modern touch. Built on a sparse rhythm section of live organ and rhythm guitar, the track gradually expands with steel guitar, horns, and synthesizers, culminating in a passionate crescendo. The accompanying video, directed by Pete Beng, premiered on The FADER and has since amassed over 30+ million views.
Both singles appear on Fight the Fight, Mortimer’s debut EP since aligning with Winta James and Overstand Entertainment, released on November 15, 2019. The six-track project blends live musicianship with emotive lyricism, offering a fresh take on soulful roots reggae.
Gliding from hard-hitting drum and bass to seductive lovers rock and spiritually conscious soul-reggae, the EP showcases Mortimer’s haunting, melismatic, honeyed vocals as he shares deeply personal stories with striking vulnerability. Fight the Fight debuted at #3 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #1 on the US iTunes Reggae Chart.
In 2020, Mortimer received two awards at the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) Honour Awards, winning Breakthrough Artiste and Song of the Year for “Lightning.”
In 2024, Mortimer released his acclaimed debut album, From Within, via Overstand Entertainment/Easy Star Records. The project features standout collaborations with some of reggae’s most respected and progressive voices, including Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the stirring opener “In My Time,” and Kabaka Pyramid and Lila Iké on the powerful, unifying single “Bruises.”
The album earned Mortimer his first GRAMMY® nomination for Best Reggae Album at the 2026 GRAMMY® Awards, won Best Reggae Album at the 2024 Reggaeville Awards, and was voted Best International Album 2024 by RIDDIM Mag. He also received the Impact Award (Reggae) and a Best New Artist (Reggae) nomination at the 2024 Caribbean Music Awards.
From Within offers a heartfelt exploration of love, self-discovery, and the duality of human experience. Blending classic reggae with elements of R&B, ’80s pop, and beyond, the album stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation. It has been widely hailed as one of the most compelling and emotionally resonant reggae releases of the past decade.
Billboard described Mortimer as “one of contemporary reggae’s guiding lights,” while GRAMMY.com praised his “raw, confessional lyrics,” and Okayplayer highlighted “an honesty that lingers with listeners.”
Mortimer credits music as a lifelong source of inspiration, dating back to age eight when he sang in his church choir. “I do music because it is my first love and where my passion lies. For me, it's about a message—one of love, hope, kindness, and selflessness—and an opportunity to share a piece of myself with others,” he says.
He cites Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, Donny Hathaway, and contemporary artists such as Stephen Marley and John Legend as key influences.
